Weird things that happened

Gabe and I were racing in Dahn-Tahn Pittsburgh a week ago, across the bridges right next to PNC Park. Kacey had just won her race, and it was very very windy, and the 'hills' on the bridges made it a pretty tough race.

Right off the bat, Gabe and I messed it up pretty bad. We were too busy following the 'right' wheels that we let the 'wrong' wheels form the winning break. With the race getting to that do or die moment, I decided that I was going to have to bring at least some of the race back together to give Gabe a chance at taking some kind of decent result. So for a lap or two I started setting tempo on the front, and it was really working. The gap to a small group contesting for 5th place was steadily dropping, from around 20-30 seconds, to about 5-10 seconds.

That is when this happened:
I felt the burn of a tire on my leg, my cranks locked up, and then I see a guy pulling even with my front wheel while crashing over the handlebars. I had just been T-boned from behind while on the front of a race. Here is a photo of it moments before impact (note the guy tucked behind me).

It took me a few days of looking at damage to my bike and tire burn and inside of my crank to realize what happened. Mind you all of this happened while going straight (the wind may have played a small factor). The guy ran into my leg with his tire, and this had forced his tire in between my crank and chainstay (this is what locked the crank up). It is also what dented my chainstay and scuffed my crank. How on earth the guy was able to still keep forward momentum enough to pull even with me while crashing is still a little crazy. That was quite literally an attack - a full fledged Kamikaze Attack.
