Fitchburg, Massachusetts
I drove up solo, because my car was packed with Echappe wheels. It was nice to be able to leave when I wanted and stay where I wanted, but it was hard not having teammates for the racing.
Circuit Race (50 miles):
Coming into this race, I didn't have any plans and I thought the racing would be too aggressive from too many people to allow a break to gain time. But coming into the 4 laps to go, there was a few groups between 10-20 seconds. And when they held those gaps after a very fast lap from the field, I knew that I had a chance to get some time. So with 4 laps to go, I attacked out of the field and picked off each group on the way to the front. Once there, I set tempo at the front for as long as I could.
The group wasn't the most cohesive, but each time the speed would die down I would get back to the front ASAP. We ended up with 11 guys off the front and coming into the last climb, I had pretty good position, but not the legs to go with the fastest acceleration. I got 6th and we got 35 seconds on the field.
Road Race (75 miles):
Plan was to stick in the race until the decisive last climb. Some guys went out on the attack early and I think 4 or 5 made it work and gained 30-40 or so seconds on me. I held onto 6th in the GC and got 13th on the stage.
Time Trial (9 miles):
Thanks to Ben Miller and Echappe I was rocking some pretty fast equipment, but I slid all the way back to 10th on GC with a 29th place finish 1:30 back from the leader.
Crit (30 miles):
Tried to get some time back with attacks with 8 and 6 laps to go, but didn't really have the legs to hold off the field. And not too many people were too eager to go at that point in the race. Pack finish and held onto 10th in the GC.
